Meaning of Alliance – Dictionary of Symbols
The Alliance symbolizes commitment, covenant. Therefore, it is the main symbol of marriage, and by extension, it is also a symbol of love.
In addition to these meanings, the wedding ring can also represent authority and protection.
It is both a sign and a symbol. While it indicates that the wearer has a boyfriend, is engaged or married (depending on the hand on which it is worn), it reflects the symbolism of love and fidelity.
On the right ring finger, engagement and commitment rings are worn, while on the left ring finger, the wedding band. This is because it is said that the left hand is closest to the heart.
The fact that it is circular supports the idea of eternal love.
Meaning in the Bible
Covenant, bérith in Hebrew, means “commitment” or “covenant”, in the same way as the Latin words foedus and testamentum.
This is why Holy Scripture is divided into two parts. They are called the Old and New Testaments, that is, the Old Covenant and the New Covenant.
The Old Covenant was the covenant made between God and Noah, and later by Yahweh and Abraham.
The covenant between God and Noah is represented by the rainbow.
According to the biblical text, Yahweh asks Abraham to split some animals in half and to join them together with a rope. This rope signifies the covenant, whose function is to unite those who have the same blood and who are divided.
In the New Testament, while the crucified Jesus is the victim (represented in the Old Testament by animals), the Eucharist symbolizes the covenant.
Ark of the Covenant
The Ark of the Covenant was a sacred object where the tablets of the law (the commandments), Aaron’s rod, and a pot of manna were kept.
It represented divine protection, which is why it was kept by the Hebrews in a very private place in the tabernacle.
