Dream meaning » smell

To smell something in your dream indicates your past experiences and feelings you associate with that particular smell. Your dream is trying to convey a feeling with a familiar smell or scent.

Alternatively, the scent may be part of your real environment which you have incorporated into your dream.

Smelling Salts

To dream that you are using smelling salts suggests that you need to pay attention to or focus on some goal or urgent matter.

If the smelling salts are not working on you or they have the opposite effect, then it means that you are refusing to acknowledging some truth or issue that is right in front on you.

Experiences from the past play a part in distinguishing what a smell in a dream means to the dreamer. Sometimes we remember people by the odors we identify them with, like grandpa’s pipe tobacco. In this example, the significance of the dream would depend on what grandpa meant to the dreamer.

Rarely we dream of scents that are not from the physical space where we are sleeping. Otherwise, the smells in dreams have a highly sensuous connotation.

It is possible that the unconscious has launched a compensation mechanism in response to lack of satisfactory sexual intercourse. Although sharp and unpleasant odors are very rare, if you perceived one, it means that you are reacting to the attitudes of others.

Each scent has a specific meaning. Mothballs allude to scandal; ginger, to love affairs; jasmine, to true spiritual experience; lavender, happiness in relationships; and nutmeg, deception. In general, a bad smell means disease; and a good one, health. Perfume denotes beauty and pride. To notice a good smell emanated by someone promises new friends; but if someone detects your odor, it is indicative of lost friendships.

There are dreams in which the sense of smell is activated. Smell is the most primitive of all of the senses, and there are powerful sense memories that are evoked when certain smells are present. This type of deep memory-response may be what is triggering a dream in which smell plays a role. If there is something specific that is being smelled in the dream, use that to inform your interpretation.

If you notice a distinct smell in a dream, this usually signifies a potent memory and the feeling associated with that memory. Something has triggered this feeling from the past.

Good smells can also be a sign of something you need, while bad smells can be a sign of something you need to stop. If you smell roasting meat, you may need more protein. If you smell perfume, you may need to spend more time with someone. If you smell a bad chemical odor, you may be exposing yourself to something physically or emotionally toxic.

Sometimes smelling something in your immediate environment while sleeping will translate into your dream, such as the smell of coffee or breakfast, or smoke from a fire. Sometimes you just need to lift the sheet and fan it out.
