Dream meaning of knots

Knots in a dream means you are subjected to some form of tether, i.e., any impairment that is delaying or limiting your projects. You are tied to the circumstances, prisoners of the environment. You feel coerced and lack enthusiasm, which limits your creativity. According to other interpretations, the knots represent the problems we are trying to solve. Furthermore, they can also symbolize the union of two people or the feminine and masculine aspects of our personality.

You’re experiencing anxiety and worry (being tied in knots). You’re making a commitment and focusing on security, as in marriage (tying the knot). Something is restricting you, or you’re trying to control something or prevent loss.

You’re working on a complex problem that needs to be solved. You’re untangling a confusing situation.

The popular superstition has always associated knots with problems. For example, at a wedding, the bride should wear a shoe lace loose to scare off witches who want to “untie” her virginity. Similarly, in Scotland, it is believed that the body of a deceased person may not be placed in the coffin if there are any lumps in their clothes. This would prevent their spirit from resting in peace. In oneiric terms, this dream portends that you will run into issues that will trigger anxiety.

To help the knight into the saddle is a promise of happiness. But if he is getting off the horse it predicts you will lose a friend. The medieval knight is a symbol of love affairs.

To see a Celtic Knot in your dream symbolizes continuity, longevity, good health and/or immortality. It also refers to a timeless tradition.

SYMBOLISM SYMBOLISM

A complex symbol embracing several important meanings all of which are related to the central idea of a tightly closed link. It implies also the symbolism of the spiral and the sigmoid line. The sign for infinity as well as the number 8 itself, are at once interlacing and also knotted, and this emphasizes the relationship of the knot with the idea of infinity—or, rather, with the manifestation of the infinite. It is comparable with the net, the loop and the plait, in that it expresses the concept of binding and fettering—a concept which is generally expressive of an unchanging psychic situation, however unaware of his predicament the individual may be: for example, that of the unliberated man who is ‘tied down’ by the Uranian god.

The ‘slipknot’ is a determinative sign in the Egyptian language, entering into the composition of words such as calumny, oaths, or a journey. The meaning must have originated in the idea of keeping in touch with someone who is far away, and there is unquestionably some connexion with the enigma of the Hanged Man in the Tarot pack. The ‘endless knot’ is one of the eight Emblems of Good Luck of Chinese Buddhism, representing longevity; the symbolism here has taken one aspect of the concept of the knot—that of pure connexion—and applied it to the biological and phenomenal planes.

A knot is an obvious symbol of constraints and restrictions on one’s freedom of thought, feelings, or actions, indicating a difficult situation that needs to be untied. Anxieties about getting married (“tying the knot”) are sometimes denoted by this dream symbol. More positively, a knot can symbolize control, and having something “all wrapped up.”

Anything tied into a knot is reflecting disparate elements that are bound together. Sometimes this is a positive construction, but it can also relate to the resulting chaos and confusion. The presence of a knot in a dream may indicate that a complicated element of your life needs to be unwound.
