SYMBOLISM SYMBOLISM
Historically speaking, the flag or banner derives from totemistic insignia as found in Egypt and, indeed, in most countries. The Persians carried gilded eagles with outstretched wings on top of long poles; the Medes, three crowns; the Parthians, a swordblade; the Greeks and Romans had signa, standards and banners.

The important point about all these symbols is not the kind of figure used, but the fact that it is always placed at the top of a pole or mast. This raised position is expressive of a kind of imperious exaltation, or the will to ‘heighten’ the spiritual significance of the figure or animal by raising it above the normal level. From this is derived the general symbolism of the banner as a sign of victory and self-assertion.

An important feature of flags is they are placed on top of a pole or mast. This elevation symbolizes the exaltation of victory and self-assertion of a community. For these reasons, in dreams, a waving flag suggests you need encouragement to move forward, a backup that provides safety.

If you are carrying this flag to the top of a mountain it means that you will soon attain your goals. But if you lose it or it is stolen from you, you could lose the position you hold.

It also has a sexual interpretation due to phallic connotation of the mast; If the flag hangs loose from the top of the mast, it may be a strong symbol of sexual unconfidence, impotence, or frigidity.

A dream featuring the flag of your own country waving in the breeze is a forecast of pleasant social engagements. To dream of raising or carrying a flag predicts an important increase in material wealth; to lower a flag at an appropriate time (such as at sunset) is a forerunner of money luck, but to lower it at any other time suggests a small loss or a disappointment in a friend. A gala display of brightly colored flags signifies satisfying achievement and/or admiration from the opposite sex.

The flag is a symbol itself and always represents something such as a country, a state, or an organization. In a dream, the flag represents another thought or feeling, depending on the nature of the flag. Something that looks or feels governmental or political might connect to the structures of your life. A white flag suggests that you need to surrender something that is occurring for you. A red flag is a warning that is often unheeded.
