The symbolic meaning of the crutch derives directly from its literal sense: the invisible, moral or economic means of supporting any other form of existence that may ‘lean’ upon it. In this sense it has often appeared in Salvador Dali’s paintings. It forms one of the Chinese emblems, again with the same significance. Frequently the crutch stands for an immoral, hidden or shameful support; this is because the foot is a symbol of the soul, and an infirmity or mutilation of the foot is the counterpart of an incurable defect of the spirit. Hence, in legends and adventure-stories, the common appearance of sinister characters, pirates, thieves and immoral hypocrites with crutches that bespeak their symbolic lameness.
