Dream meaning » alligator

Alligators are known for big mouths with sharp teeth – a great way of symbolizing a big mouthed person who makes sharp or biting comments.

Alligators ambush their prey by coming up out of the water, which can be a way of describing destructive emotions, personal attacks that come out of nowhere, or the potential for danger.

An alligator can symbolize someone who can’t be trusted. Alligators can appear non-threatening while lying in water or on the side of a river, but get too close and you could be their lunch!

A teacher has a dream about entering a building through glass double doors. Inside, it is dark. The floor between herself and the opposite wall is a pool of dark water. In the water is an alligator.
She’s leery of it, but a female co-worker from her school walks up and pats it on the head. The dreamer walks out of the building, and outside is a set of stairs that leads up into the air, seemingly to nowhere.

The dreamer associates the glass double doors with her workplace, which has similar doors. The day before the dream she had a bad encounter with a supervisor. She thought she could openly talk about feelings regarding a work situation, but the encounter left her cold. The supervisor will turn on her in an instant like an alligator, and she found out the hard way.

The co-worker’s action of patting the alligator on the head shows that she acts oblivious to the threat from their mutual supervisor.

The stairs to nowhere symbolize a suggestion that the dreamer take steps to protect herself.

Physical Physical
You are focusing on hidden danger, deceit, or evil-minded people. The crocodile represents your own aggressive behavior, or negative, snapping attitudes.
Emotional Emotional
You feel you could be swallowed up by chaos, greed, gluttony, hidden violence, or dark, stifling emotions. Perhaps you’ve displayed false emotion and shed ingenuous “crocodile tears.”
Spiritual Spiritual
You are focusing on your deepest subconscious, primal mind, your beliefs in evil and lack of safety in the world, and your survival instincts. You need to look for ways to be more sincere.

All reptiles connect with a primitive orientation toward survival and other basic instincts. Since alligators are water dwellers, their meaning and power are associated with emotional territory. They have a level of ferocity, so they also connect with scary and dangerous feelings that live just below the surface of consciousness.

When dreaming of alligators, you are connecting with the power to protect yourself by lying in wait. The flip side to this is being vulnerable to your own reactivity when matters of emotional vulnerability are present. Alligators relate to precision and control in all states.

Alligators and crocodiles are often confused, but the symbolic meaning is essentially the same for both.

Animals represent some part of you, usually some aspect of your instincts or more primal side. Alligators usually signal distress or a conflict.

If you are attacked by an alligator, your problem is overwhelming and you must wrestle to get control. The stress is getting to you! You might even be in danger.
If you run from and escape an alligator, you are narrowly avoiding problems, but they are still after you and you need to address them before they catch up to you.
To befriend an alligator means you are in control of your problems.
To kill an alligator means you are threatened enough to consider drastic action in solving your problem.
